The eMims Claims Handling System

Background to eMims Development

The development of some Internet functionality for MIMS was a perceived need in 1998. The ACT government in Australia needed to be able to report claims remotely via the Internet. The initial email system which was set up didn't work very well, and wasn't too sophisticated, so I undertook development of eMims using Omnis Studio remote forms and WebClient in 1999.

Installing eMims

Installation of eMims as a client service is very easy - just download and install the appropriate WebClient plug-in for the user's browser, and make a bookmark to the eMims page on the server.

Setting up a web server for eMims involves several stages:

Web Server
The web server machine must be running an appropriate web server, or HTTP server, program. eMims has been tested with Internet Information Services from Microsoft, and Apache web server.

Omnis Application Server
The Omnis runtime must be installed, serialised configured to listen on the correct port (default is 5912).

eMims files
The application libraries (including MASTER.LBS, which resides in the Omnis Web Server's startup directory) and all the web pages .ini files and datafiles should be loaded into the correct locations.

Interfacing MIMS and eMims

If MIMS is running on the same network as eMims, then there is no problem having the two systems access the same database. If not, then complexities of data transfer and replication are introduced.

Security in eMims

eMims supports a separate personnel file from the main MIMS systems, as there may well be different users, and also because it is possible for one copy of eMims to run simultaneously with several MIMS databases. Different users can be certified for different organisation levels, claim groups and functionality. For full instructions, see the User configuration document.

Using eMims

There is a full on-line user manual, which is also available from within the system.
